The Belgian troopship Léopoldville was sunk by German submarine U-486 in the English Channel off Cherbourg.

Approximately 763 American soldiers and 56 crew were killed

The survivors were sworn to secrecy not to talk about the incident
(as they could face court-martial and end up getting shot)

until the end of the war, as they thought it would bring bad moral to the war effort
